Graham Sharp: Credit goes to Darrell for bringing this song into our orbit. He was pretty insistent that we include a cover song on the record, not one by someone who has already “made it,” but from an up-and-comer: enter Robbie Fulks. We had a basket full of our own songs that we were eager to include so we were slow coming around to the idea. The first time I heard “Fare Thee Well, Carolina Gals” I was distracted or maybe listening for the wrong things. When I circled back around for a second listen a couple weeks later I was floored, absolutely dumbstruck. It all made perfect sense why Darrell asked us to dig into this one. It's a song that neither Aaron or I would have written, and it's perfect for us. As a band and individually we have such a deep connection to Chapel Hill. All of the images and sentiments are not mine, but they're familiar and I can picture every scene. When Tommy Thompson is mentioned at the end I fell out; he was a friend of my grandfather's in their later years. Aaron does such a great job with this song. This is easily one of my favorite vocal performances on the record.
Aaron Burdett: Darrell was clear from our first conversations that he wanted us to do a cover tune on the album. None of us were really that into the idea at first, but Darrell kept suggesting it and ultimately he was absolutely right. He had sent over a playlist of some suggestions. Some of them seemed possible and some didn't click for us. But when I heard Robbie Fulks’ “Fare Thee Well, Carolina Gals” I was drawn in so deeply. That song still feels like a novella or a short story to me. It means more every time I hear it and it probably took me a dozen focused listens to really "get'' what it is all about. It's so well crafted. And once I got in touch with where I thought Robbie was coming from I found the place where I could get inside it and deliver it vocally in a way that both honored the original and put a new spin on it. For some reason it's one of the most powerful songs I've had the pleasure of performing in many years. I love the juxtaposition of the narrator's nostalgia and anger and optimism and the way they all weave together. For me, the song has a depth that I have not yet found the bottom of. I get teary eyed just thinking about it. It's exactly the kind of song I connect with and love to sing. And this SCR arrangement is a masterpiece, I'll go ahead and say it. Thank you Robbie and thank you Darrell. What a gift.

I don't listen to much country music, so I don't really know where this one lands, but I find it has some pretty good tunes and definitively good musicianship. Some of the songs mights soound a bit cheesy, but I enjoy this album overall nonetheless. The tunes which are more sounding like ballads get my preference, such as Northern Babe, and North Country Blues. Thibaut Devigne

1st time i heard DeathWish, i turned it off.
felt rushed, not the Isbell i've come to admire. really grab'd me when i took time to listen on the 2nd try. the writing on these songs stopped me in my tracks more than once. raw talent with just enough polish in the delivery.
