about

Mike Guggino: I wrote "Old Stone House" about 10 years ago, when I sold the first house I ever owned: an early-twentieth century stone house in downtown Brevard, NC. Nicky and I have played the A part of the tune for years at our live shows as a musical intro to our song "Call the Captain." I had always hoped to record the song in it's entirety with the full band, but there never seemed a need for a slow waltz on a record. When we met with Darrell Scott for the first time to discuss songs for this new project, he was really adamant that we needed an instrumental on there. We started tossing around ideas and he suggested we do a medley of tunes, similar to those found in traditional Irish music. Graham had a medium paced banjo tune "Handlebars" that he had been working on and the two seemed to flow together nicely. Our medley was coming together but it lacked a fast paced ending. The melody for "Chimney Rock" just came out of my mandolin one morning a few weeks before recording began. The name comes from the 315-foot granite monolith that's located a few miles down the road from where we made the record.
